Year 5’s Mountain Rescue Mission: Can You Handle the Weight?

Year 5’s Mountain Rescue Mission: Can You Handle the Weight?

Our Year 5 classrooms have officially been designated as headquarters for an elite mountain rescue team! ,The children stepped into their new roles as Logistics Officers to begin our project, “The 2.5 kg Limit”.

The Weight of the Mission In Lesson 1, “The Gear Audit,” students discovered exactly what it feels like to carry a survival load. Before hitting the trail, we had to master our Metric Foundations, using bar models to prove that 1,000g is equal to 1kg. The children were surprised to see how quickly their limit was reached—a 1.2kg tent peg set takes up nearly half of the entire allowance!. Balancing essential items like a 50g whistle against heavier gear required careful calculation to ensure no bag exceeded the strict 2.5 kg limit.

Trekking the Rescue Route Once the bags were packed and verified, it was time for the “Trek Mission.” Our Logistics Officers took their 2.5 kg packs outside to simulate a journey to a remote rescue point. Drawing on our learning from “The Rescue Route” lesson, the children converted their mission distance of 2.4km into 2,400 metres.

It wasn’t an easy stroll! To replicate the challenges of a mountain environment, the teams had to navigate:

  • Uneven Terrain: Scrambling across the trim trail to simulate rocky ridges.
  • Obstacle Navigation: Stepping through tyres to mimic trekking through difficult, debris-strewn paths.

Mission Reflection By the end of the trek, many students realized that while 2.5 kg might sound light on paper, it feels very different after 2,400 metres of climbing and balancing! This hands-on experience has perfectly prepared our officers for the next stage of their mission: managing hydration levels and calculating the cost of waterproof shelter fabrics.

Ask your child: Which survival item was the most difficult to leave behind to stay under the 2.5 kg limit?
