Children’s Kitchen
What is our Children's Kitchen?
At Roughwood Primary School, we believe that education should extend far beyond the classroom. We are thrilled to introduce our brand-new, purpose-built Children’s Kitchen. A dedicated space where pupils roll up their sleeves and immerse themselves in the world of cooking and essential life skills.
Our learning is rooted in first-hand experiences and meaningful cross-curricular links; in this kitchen, children don’t just cook; they develop vital skills, from oracy and language to practical applications of maths and science.
Why we Cook
We use cooking to bring Maths, Science, and Literacy to life. By calculating ratios or observing chemical changes, children see the real-world application of their classroom learning. As well as the vast opportunities within the curriculum, cooking at Roughwood also offers other benefits.
Nutritional Advocacy Children learn to follow the Eatwell Guide to understand how nutrition impacts their physical health and emotional regulation.
Cultural Exploration Our curriculum links recipes to termly topics. This allows children to explore history and geography through food, such as baking Viking bread or crafting Mediterranean salads.
Essential Life Skills Children master age-appropriate techniques that they can take home. These include the “bridge and claw” cutting methods as well as boiling, baking, and seasoning.
