Mission ‘Project Sentinel’ Begins: Year 5 Take on the 2.5 kg Survival Challenge!

Mission Accepted: Year 5 Logistics Officers at Work!

Our Year 5 classrooms have turned into a mountain rescue headquarters as the children began their new project, “The 2.5 kg Limit“. Working as Logistics Officers, the students are tasked with designing a survival bag that contains all the essential gear needed for a rescue mission without exceeding a strict 2.5 kg weight limit.

In our first lesson, “The Gear Audit,” the focus was on learning to accurately convert between grams and kilograms. Using bar models to visualize that 1,000g is equal to 1kg, the children carefully weighed and evaluated various survival items. They had to make tough decisions about what to include, comparing the weight of small items like a 50g whistle to heavier gear like a 1.2kg tent peg set.

It has been a brilliant start to the project, showing everyone just how important precision and math are when preparing for a survival mission!
