Nurture (KS2)
Nurture Provision
What is Nurture?
The Key Stage 2 Nurture Room is a therapeutic intervention designed specifically for pupils facing Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges. It provides a secure, low-arousal environment to foster emotional stability and personal growth.
Learning is only possible when a child feels safe. Our goal is to equip vulnerable learners with the self-regulation tools they need to move from simply “surviving” to “thriving” within the wider school community.
The Nurture staff are ELSA & KitBag trained, so children have access to emotional support throughout the morning. Learn more about ELSA.
How does it work?
The provision is a half-day intervention. Pupils attend the Nurture Room every morning and return to their mainstream classes every afternoon.
Pupils do not fall behind academically while in Nurture. Class teachers provide differentiated Reading, Writing, and Maths tasks in an “In-Tray” each morning. Nurture staff help facilitate this learning while balancing it with therapeutic repair and hands-on activities, like cooking.
We rely on the SPELL framework (Structure, Positive, Empathy, Low Arousal, Links) to make the school day predictable. Children use personalised visual timetables (such as “Now/Next/Then” boards) to reduce anxiety and clearly see transitions between academic work and therapeutic play
Admissions and Parental Partnership
Nurture is for the most vulnerable learners and is treated as a Wave 3 (Specialist) intervention. Placements are carefully decided by a trio consisting of the Head Teacher, SENDCO, and Behaviour for Learning Leader, after other mainstream support strategies have been exhausted.
Parents are viewed as key stakeholders. We operate with full transparency to ensure strategies used in Nurture can be mirrored at home. Parents receive regular updates, emotional support, and are active participants in all progress reviews.
