Year 5 had a fantastic trip to Manor Lodge this week as part of our history learning about Mary Queen of Scots. During her time in England, Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in several places, including right here in Sheffield. Visiting Manor Lodge helped us imagine what life might have been like during Tudor times.
The day was packed with exciting activities. First, we explored the beautiful herb garden where we picked our own herbs to make pomanders. In Tudor times, pomanders were used to make rooms smell nice and to help keep away bad smells and illness. The garden smelled amazing as we crushed and mixed herbs such as rosemary, lavender and mint.
Next, we had the chance to dress up in Tudor clothing. The costumes helped us picture what people might have worn during the time of Mary Queen of Scots. Some of us wore long gowns while others tried on tunics and cloaks. It felt like we had travelled back in time!
We also discovered what Tudor sweet treats might have looked like by making our own marzipan sculptures. In Tudor times, marzipan was shaped into impressive designs and served at special feasts. Year 5 showed fantastic creativity by shaping their marzipan into fruits, animals and other fun designs.
Throughout the visit we learned more about Mary Queen of Scots and her imprisonment in Sheffield, and how important Manor Lodge was during Tudor times. It was a brilliant way to bring our history learning to life.
A big well done to Year 5 for their enthusiasm, excellent behaviour and wonderful creativity. We had a fantastic day learning, exploring and stepping back into Tudor history!
