Muddy pigs and calming jars in the LEAF

This week, our sensory storytelling centered around “Who’s on the Farm?” by Julia Donaldson and the theme flowed throughout the week.

The highlight of our Attention Autism “bucket” sessions was definitely the farmyard races! We had a blast watching toy pigs barrel down the guttering, ending their journey with a very satisfying “muddy splat” at the bottom. It was a fantastic way to build engagement and shared focus.

Maths and life cycles 🌸

In Maths, we’ve been putting our “first, next, and last” skills to the test. We focused on sequencing, specifically looking at the life cycle of a plant. The children worked hard to order the stages of growth, from a tiny seed to a blooming flower.

ELSA

Our ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) sessions this week were all about finding our “calm.” We created beautiful Sensory Glitter Jars tailored to how we feel:

  1. Choosing Emotions: We started by picking a color that matched our current emotion.
  2. Filling the Jars: We added special items that help us feel grounded.
  3. The Science of Calm: After adding water and oil, we shook them up!

Watching the glitter slowly drift to the bottom was the perfect accompaniment to our deep breathing exercises. It’s a wonderful tool the children can now use whenever they need a moment of peace.

Note to Parents: Ask your child which color they chose for their jar and if they can show you their “deep belly breathing” at home!
