Creating bug hotels with 3D shapes

In this numeracy session, we focused on learning about 3D shapes in a fun and practical way. We started by going over the names of different shapes like cubes, cuboids, cones, and pyramids, and talked about their features such as faces and vertices. Everyone joined in and showed they were remembering lots from before.

After that, we worked in teams to build bug hotels using these shapes. This meant we had to work together, share ideas, and figure out what would make our structure strong. We quickly found out that cubes and cuboids worked best for the base because their flat faces made it easier to stack and build on top of them.

Some groups tried using cones and pyramids at the bottom, but this didn’t work as well because of their pointy ends, which made things wobble or fall over. This helped us understand why some shapes are better for certain jobs than others.

Overall, it was a really enjoyable session where we learned more about shapes while building something creative, and it helped us practice teamwork too.
