Our Curriculum

At Roughwood Primary School, the curriculum is a thrilling adventure! You can download your child’s class plans below to find out all about the exciting topics they are diving into this year. Alternatively, look at our Subjects page to see more specific learning for different subjects.

From exploring the mysteries of space to learning about the history of the Victorians and everything in between, our teachers have a huge range of fun and engaging subjects. You can also download the Long Term Curriculum Map to see what children will lear throughout their time here at Roughwood.

You can even download the Sequential Learning Grids to look at all the amazing things your children will be discovering this term.

2-Year-Olds (How does your garden grow? & Where will our adventure take us?)
The children will be exploring nature by growing plants, hunting for minibeasts, and enjoying a mobile zoo visit. Later in the term, they will pretend to travel to space, dive under the sea, and finish the year with a fun seaside morning playing in paddling pools.

Nursery (How does your garden grow? & Where will our adventure take us?)
The children will get their hands dirty planting vegetables and learning how to care for them. They will learn about farm animals and watch caterpillars turn into beautiful butterflies. The term also includes a “space picnic” and an exciting trip to the seaside at Cleethorpes. In Maths, they will be practising counting up to 5 and learning about shapes.

Reception (How does your garden grow? & Where will our adventure take us?)
Building on what they learned in Nursery, the children will plant seeds, observe insect life cycles, and learn about where our food comes from. They will enjoy a “space launch day”, draw their own maps, and visit the seaside. In Maths, they will be counting to 20 and beyond, and they will spend time preparing for their big move to Year 1.

Years 1 & 2 Land Ahoy! (How is the seaside different from where I live?)
The children will learn all about the coast, comparing our local area to Cleethorpes and looking at old photographs to see how beach holidays have changed over the last 100 years. They will track the weather and seasons, design and sew their own kites, and practise telling the time and using fractions in Maths.

Year 3 Farm to Fork (Where does our food come from?)
Children will discover how food travels from the farm to our plates, bringing this to life with a fantastic trip to Rand Farm. In Science, they will learn about soil and rocks, and they will even dissect plants to see how they grow. In Design and Technology, they will be engineering their very own mechanical pop-up books.

Year 4 Perilous Plague (What impact has the plague had on modern medicine?)
Year 4 will step back in time with a visit to the plague village of Eyam to see what life was like during the Great Plague. In Science, they will learn all about electricity and test different materials to see what conducts electricity. They will use these new skills to design and build their own electrical games with buzzers and bulbs.

Year 5 Extreme Earth (What is the impact of our changing world?)
The children will investigate natural disasters like volcanoes and earthquakes, looking at where they happen and how they affect our world. In Science, they will explore the life cycles of different animals and plants. In Design and Technology, they will practise their sewing skills to design and make emergency “survival bags”.

Year 6 (What Makes Me Me?)
In their final primary term, Year 6 will study the human body, including a real heart dissection, and learn about how living things evolve over time. They will explore how life in Britain has changed since 1948 (including the creation of the NHS). To help talk about their feelings before moving to secondary school, they will design and build moving “worry monsters” powered by air (pneumatics)
