Natural portraits

Today we went to the outdoor classroom for an exciting learning session. We explored the area and looked carefully at the different natural materials around us, including leaves, sticks, petals, stones and seeds. Then we used these treasures to create pictures of our own faces. We placed everything on black card so the colours and shapes stood out clearly. First we thought about where our eyes should go, then we added a nose and a mouth. After that we chose materials for hair and tried different ideas until it looked like us. Some faces had curly leaf hair, while others used long grass or pebble earrings. The activity helped us notice details about our features and practise careful arranging skills. It also showed that nature can be used for art and learning. Working outside felt calm and creative because we could hear birds and feel fresh air around us. I was proud of my face picture and enjoyed sharing it with everyone. It was fun, inspiring and different from classroom lessons today.
