Year 5, the children have been developing their artistic skills by creating colourful oil pastel rockets inspired by the work of space artist Peter Thorpe. They explored how Thorpe uses bold colours, expressive shapes and energetic lines to create exciting images of rockets travelling through space.
The children began by practising different oil pastel techniques in their sketchbooks. They experimented with blending colours, layering, creating highlights and using strong lines to show movement. They also explored different rocket shapes and considered how they could make their designs look imaginative and dynamic.
After practising, the children created their first rocket designs in their sketchbooks. They reflected on their work and thought carefully about what they could improve. They then redrafted their ideas, making changes to the shape, colour, detail and composition of their rockets.
These improved designs will be used in collaborative space-themed pieces. The children will combine their individual rockets with the work of others to create large, imaginative artworks. This process has helped them understand the importance of practising, reviewing and redrafting when developing a final piece of art.
Through this project, the children have been inspired by Peter Thorpe while developing confidence with oil pastels, learning how to show movement and working creatively as part of a team.
