Quality First Teaching is at the heart of everything we do here at Roughwood. All class teachers are aware of the needs and requirements of their pupils and plan and differentiate accordingly.
The Graduated Approach is used within the school as we are continually assessing, planning, implementing and reviewing our approach to teaching all children where a potential special educational need has been identified, this process becomes increasingly personalised and responds over time to a growing understanding of the child’s or young person’s barriers to and gaps in learning and an increasingly individualised assessment of need enables us to continually reflect on our approaches to meeting a child’s needs.

Meet Our Dedicated SEND Team
At Roughwood Primary, we believe in a collaborative and personal approach to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) support. We are incredibly proud of our dedicated SEND team, who work tirelessly to ensure every child receives the tailored support they need to thrive.
Mrs. Staples – KS1 and EYFS SENDCo
As the SENDCo for our Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, my passion is ensuring our youngest learners get the very best start on their educational journey. I am committed to working closely with children, families, and staff to identify needs early and implement supportive strategies that build confidence and foster a love for learning. My goal is to make sure every child feels understood, valued, and empowered to achieve their full potential.
Miss Brown – KS2 SENDCo
As the KS2 SENDCo, I am dedicated to supporting our older primary pupils through their crucial years of development. My focus is on nurturing independence, building essential skills, and working hand-in-hand with parents, teachers, and external agencies to create inclusive learning environments. I believe in celebrating every step of progress and ensuring our children feel prepared and confident for their transition to secondary school and beyond.
The LEAF@Roughwood: Our Special Enhanced Provision
At Roughwood Primary, we are proud to offer The LEAF @ Roughwood, our dedicated Special Enhanced Provision (SEP) designed to provide specialised support for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The LEAF is specifically tailored for pupils with neurological differences, such as Autism, whose primary need, as identified in their Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP), is Communication and Interaction or Autism.

4. What is “The Graduated Approach”?
“The Graduated Approach” is a four-part cycle (Assess, Plan, Do, Review) that schools use to support children with SEND.
- Assess: We gather information about your child’s needs.
- Plan: We agree on specific support and outcomes with you and your child.
- Do: We put the planned support into action.
- Review: We regularly look at the impact of the support and decide on the next steps.
This cycle helps us to continuously adapt and improve the support for your child.
5. Who is the SENDCo and what do they do?
SENDCo stands for Special Educational Needs Coordinator. At Roughwood Primary, we have two dedicated SENDCos: Mrs. Staples (for EYFS and KS1) and Miss Brown (for KS2). They are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day provision for children with SEND, liaising with parents, teachers, and external professionals to ensure every child receives appropriate support and makes good progress.
6. How will I be involved in decisions about my child’s SEND support?
Your involvement is crucial! We believe in working in close partnership with parents. You’ll be invited to regular meetings to discuss your child’s progress, review their support plan, and share your insights. Your views and knowledge about your child are highly valued in the decision-making process.
