Year 3 Artist Study

Year 3 have started their artist study on the well-known artist, Marianne North. We have analysed her paintings, techniques and colours.

In our first art lesson of the summer term, we began by looking at her style and learnt about her love for nature and plants around the world.

Interestingly, we have learnt that between 1871 and 1885, Marianne travelled extensively, almost always on her own. From Brazil, to Jamaica, to Japan and India, she visited 15 countries in 14 years and painted the people, places and plants that she saw alone the way.

It was a common Victorian belief that women shouldn’t travel alone without a husband or male chaperone. The lives of most Victorian women in the middle and upper classes revolved around the home, where they would look after their husbands and children.

We will be continuing this learning in the next few weeks, before beginning to recreate our own inspired piece art work based on her love for flowers and plants. Have a look at some of her paintings…
