Heavy or Light?

In numeracy today, Chestnuts have been using a special measuring tool called a balance scale. We learnt that if the scale goes down, the item is heavy and if the side of the scale goes up, the item is lighter.

We used a selection of classroom items to test whether they were heavy or light. 2 children chose an item each, we predicted what we thought would happen to the scale and then we measured them.

Children used the word ‘because’ to give reasoning when explaining what happened.

“The stapler went down because it is heavy”

“The pencil went up because it is light’

At the end of the session we predicted which we thought would be the heaviest. We will test our predictions tomorrow using connecting cubes as a non-standard unit of measure.
