Class 4 – Using Oracy Before Designing and Evaluating a Steelman’s Snap!

In design and technology, the children have designed and created a delicious sandwich for the steel workers of South Yorkshire.

In today’s lesson, children learnt about knife safety, prepared ingredients safely and learnt how to make a sandwich hygienically; to create a healthy and tasty sandwich. As we learn about the steel men in our class text, the children’s task was to create a delicious, tasty and healthy lunch for them.

All children had different roles in todays session such as ‘sandwich tester’ and ‘quality control manager’.

The children chose their initial main sandwich ingredient from the protein group, looked at the most suitable moist spread (or fillings) that were needed, learnt how to snip lettuce leaves with kitchen scissors, distributed their fillings on one side of the sandwich, then used the correct knives to practise spreading and then slicing using the ‘bridging’ technique.

Hygiene was a priority in today’s lesson – children learnt about the importance of hygiene such as tying hair back, clean hands and fingers, cleaning and swapping knives, and the use of the chopping boards safely.

Once our instructions were rehearsed and written in literacy, the children got to make evaluate their sandwiches and discussed their favourite (and least favourite) fillings!
