Family Engagement Sessions

Throughout the school year we hold numerous sessions where parents and carers are invited into school to work alongside their child.  These range from stand alone family engagement sessions to families coming into the classroom to support their child’s learning.  These sessions are well attended and we enjoy sharing our learning with our wonderful families.  Below are a number of examples of family engagement sessions that have taken place recently.

Multiply and MTC for Parents and Carers of Children in Year Four

As part of a project that Roughwood is involved in called Multiply, parents and carers were able to join us once again in school to learn about how we teach maths.

We also discussed the Multiplication Timestables Check which happens for Year 4 children in June 2024.

Parents and carers learnt some of the strategies children use and how best to support their child in learning maths; particularly learning and recalling their timetables.

Foundation Stay and Play

“We have had a fabulous afternoon of autumn themed fun at our Stay and Play session. Thank you to everyone for coming, and of course, to our wonderful EYFS team, for all their hard work in making today such a success.”

KS1 Multiply Session

Parent and carers in key stage one were invited into school for another of our ‘multiply’ maths sessions. During the session, parents and carers developed their strategies for numeracy. We looked at strategies we use for addition and subtraction across key stage one and the concrete objects we use to support the learning. The children then joined the session to take part in an activity where they had to make fruit kebabs with a total of 30. We thought of ways to deepen our learning, thinking and problem solving in mathematics.

During the activity each piece of fruit had a different value and they had to work together to add, subtract, multiply and divide to create the total of 30. We had lots of fun and at the end the children got to eat their creations. The children even used the skills they had been taught in DT to cut the fruit using the bridge and claw technique.
