Computing in Year 5 – learning about algorithms

In our computing lessons, class 6 have been learning about algorithms and decomposition.

The children have learnt that algorithms are a sequence of instructions or a set of rules that are followed to complete a task. This task can be anything, but we learnt that an important rule is that you must give clear instructions for it.

Today, the children learnt that algorithms should fulfill a pattern, just like recipes create a particular food. For instance, as Mr Clarke explained, when following a cupcake recipe, you know you’re going to get cupcakes, not a chicken dinner, at the end of the baking process!

Take a look at some of our scripts that we have written with very clear algorithms and instructions to help our characters escape from the maze…
