Mental Addition – Year 3

Our maths learning this week has focused on addition strategies. Whilst we have been focusing on column addition, we also have been thinking about strategies for mental addition.

We have been practicing adding large numbers in our head and thinking of strategies of how to do this quickly and efficiently. We have talked about numbers bonds, adding 10 and subtracting 1 when adding 9, and partitioning amongst many other strategies. We practiced these on our own, then worked as a group to decide if number sentences were true or false, and then worked with a partner to solve some more number sentences.

Watch the video below to listen to Natasha, Ben, Mason and Lilly work collaboratively to reason and decide if a number sentence is true or false.
